Veterans
Our veterans have sacrificed plenty; those who served our country should never go hungry or suffer in silence. Yet in the state of Florida, current policy strips veterans of SNAP eligibility waivers they once had, and leaves millions without adequate mental health support. We must restore the dignity that has been lost.
Veterans Deserve Support Beyond Their Service
Too many veterans return home to face challenges alone, including accessing healthcare, securing stable housing, and finding employment. Those who served our country deserve reliable support systems that ensure they can transition successfully into civilian life and live with dignity.
Policy Priorities
- Reinstate the SNAP work-requirement waiver for veterans to restore the exemption that allowed veterans to qualify for food stamps without meeting the 20-hour-per-week work requirement, including those enrolled full-time in school.
- Allocate $20 billion in direct support for veterans under 45 while including weekly mental health counseling (covering approximately 4 million veterans); unused counseling funds may be transferred to an immediate family member.
- Expand funding for Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E) with a dedicated focus on mental health services, addressing the elevated rates of suicide and depression among veterans.
- Redirect corporate defense subsidies toward the people who actually served, not the munitions manufacturers who profited from their sacrifice.
- Recognize that a veteran working 15 hours a week while attending school full-time is working hard and deserves food assistance, not disqualification.
